Transfigure

A painting of butterflies and an old book

The human Journey is a continuous act of transfiguration. ~ John O Donohue (excerpt from Anam Cara)

I’ve always been fascinated by the alchemy of transfiguration. It’s one of the dominant themes that inspire my work. In this painting, I explore very personal questions regarding the process of transformation: What does it encompass? What is the catalyst behind it? What alters or translates? Through the symbols of the butterfly, moth renderings, and compass I explore this deep mystery of transmutation~ not so much to seek an answer, but to just feel it through the act of painting. In the end, I discovered a deeper dimension about myself, and the translucency of the butterfly wing came to symbolize a new clarity that blossomed in me and ultimately transfigured me. This was a pivotal painting for me on my continued journey as an artist.

The Transfiguration painting envokes that feeling of transformation beautifully. I see as the layers being revealed and layered some with permanence and some impermanence. Each layer of life that we keep or discard to create who are as seen through the moth metamorphosis coming to life from life!

Thank you! You beautifully articulated the essence of transformation I was attempting to convey in this painting. Through the transparency and opacity of paint passages, I was hoping to express the permanence and impermanence of life as it continually evolves.
